Whether its in_Judaism or in_the_Catholic_Church, there is the implication of other gods beyond the Abrahamic_religions.
Throughout most of history there has been a, mine is better than yours approach. Plus, some people have more of a connection to the forces of nature or scientific principles than in any particular deity.
Over time, regardless of any particular belief_system, curious people have noticed peculiar patterns of actions & things that range from the light or dark side of the_Force, otherwise known as the concept of good_and_evil.
Whether or not the universe has a conscious creator, there is certainly an aspect of Quantum_mechanics to it. A cosmic machine & mechanism of space & energy.
At a basic & barbaric level of nature, the weak & small are constantly hunted & gobbled up by those usually higher up the food chain. However, consciousness can enable humans, if not some other beings to potentially rise above the cold mechanical level of a predator, bully or monster.

Being cold hearted, efficient & mechanical, makes for a nasty predator so Mechanic is an appropriate term for a person operating on such a level.
